The frame is called Canoe Frame because the wood, placed horizontally with its groove facing up, has a shape of a canoe. The frame is composed of two pieces of carved wood and two twines on each side.
The traditional Canoe Frame will hold two rectangular glasses with a batik, cloth or document in between. The new Canoe Frame uses a piece of foam board or cardboard instead of two pieces of glass. The piece to be framed is then taped or stapled to the board instead of being inserted between the two glasses. The board is slided inside the top and the bottom grooves; the twines still work the same way: they are twisted by a small piece of wood and provide the necessary tension that keeps the board/ glasses from moving at all.
The use of the foam board or cardboard still provides a visually aesthetic look but has the advantage of being lighter than the canoe frame with glass. This is a unique and ingenious framing concept that works well with documents, photos, degrees... The new Canoe Frame in particular allows for different type of artwork to be framed, not restricted only to items that fit between the two glasses but also to random objects such as masks, quilts, decorative shells on cloth, mudcloth....
These new canoe frames are lightweight, and thus inexpensive to mail.
